Ford Ecosport Overview
The Ford EcoSport was one of the first models that started the trend of subcompact SUVs in India. After over four years in the Indian market, the SUV finally received its mid-cycle facelift about six months ago and it was a much-needed one especially to compete with players like the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and Tata Nexon. Ford had to make the car smarter and even better, which it did, by offering new styling, improved interior, smarter features, and an all-new 1.5-litre petrol engine as well. Sadly though, Ford gave its much-loved and awarded 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine a skip, which was a surprise! But Ford India did not take long to answer prayers of the enthusiasts out there and relaunched the EcoBoost engine with a new top-of-the-line package – the Ford EcoSport S variant, earlier in May 2018. We got to drive the SUV on the outskirts of the EcoSport’s home city Chennai and here are our first impressions.
Ford Ecosport Style
Ford EcoSport has a unique design that highlights its high ground clearance. The front portion of the vehicle consists of a single unit having a prominent hexagonal grille flanked by horizontal slats. The Ford logo at the centre of grill looks commanding. The makers have used a lot of chrome plating to lend an exquisite look to the fascia. The highlights of the frontal fascia are its projector headlights with Daytime Running Lamps and fog lamps. The Ford EcoSport lower-end models drive on 15-inch alloy wheels whereas the top-end versions have 17-inch wheels to deliver a higher Ford EcoSport ground clearance.
The Ford EcoSport specifications are 3998mm X 1765mm X 1647mm thereby ensuring that it is a tall vehicle. The ground clearance for the lower end Ford EcoSport cars is 200mm, high enough for all speed breakers and bumps. The wheelbase of 2519mm lends adequate balance as it provides the right equilibrium to balance the front and back portions of the car.
Ford Ecosport Space
The cabin is where one can instantly make out that most things have changed and the party piece is the 8-inch floating touchscreen. I’ll discuss the screen first as it is a brilliant unit! The touch response is fluid and better than the competition and visibility under sunlight too is good. The unit comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay but doesn’t have in-built satellite navigation but can display your phone’s navigation. Other connectivity options include two USB port, two 12V sockets, and AUX-in.
Based on feedback from Indian consumers, the seats in the new Ford EcoSport have been redesigned and are now wider and have better cushioning. The dashboard itself is new and looks more modern than the older model’s and is well-built too. All controls are placed within easy reach of the driver and the screen itself is quite close to the steering, making it easy to use all controls.
There are enough storage compartments inside the cabin to store objects such as smartphones, wallet, coins and other small items. Like the front seats, the rear seat too has improved cushioning and offers good under thigh and back support. The backrest incline angle too is nice and will keep occupants comfortable provided there are limited to a count of two. The fact that the legroom too is less than the key competitors makes it hard for a third passenger to squeeze in. The front centre armrest too east into rear legroom for the middle passenger and hence taller occupants might have issues with legroom but headroom being better should be less of an issue.
The boot volume has now been increased by 30 litres and with the foldable rear seats, total volume can be increased to 1,178 litres. There’s also a smart removable base lid, which can be slightly raised to create a cavity that can be used to store precious belongings such as laptops or tablets away from unwanted eyes.To know more details on Ford Ecosport visit Resultmag
Ford Ecosport Gearbox
As already mentioned, the EcoBoost engine is not new to the EcoSport and unlike its other powertrains, this one continues to be imported from Europe and Ford hasn’t changed it a lot either. In fact, the three-cylinder turbocharged engine is still as peppy as ever and eager now, and a big credit for that goes to the brand new six-speed manual gearbox which replaced the previous 5-speed unit and currently offered only with the EcoBoost engine. With that one additional ratio on offer, the power delivery is much smoother now and you start to feel the surge as early as 3,000 rpm, while all the 123 horses come into action once the needle crosses the 6,000 rpm mark.
The torque output also remains unchanged at 170 Nm, although, it kicks in as early as 2,000 rpm, and there is ample of it till you reach 4,500 rpm and the SUV also has a strong mid-range. The new gearbox is also quite responsive and shifts are quick and precise, having said that, you still have to work the gearbox a tad bit in order to extract the best performance from the car.
Ford EcoSport diesel mileage is around 23 kmpl whereas the automatic variants deliver less at 14.8 kmpl. Ford EcoSport petrol mileage is a satisfactory figure of approximately 17 to 18 kmpl. It does not set the roads on fire, but the Ford EcoSport mileage is a decent one in its segment.
Ford Ecosport Driving
Ford is known to make cars that are fun to drive and the new EcoSport lives up to that expectation. Once you drive the new Ford EcoSport for a while, it is noticeable that the suspension has been softened up a bit and that’s actually a good thing. While the olde EcoSport did feel a bit harsh while going over big potholes the new one is more comfortable. Bumps are now soaked in much better, keeping the occupants comfortable. Best thing is there’s hardly any compromise with the handling due to the softer setup. High-speed corners and switchbacks are still a breeze to go through and the EcoSport exhibits little body-roll. Grip from the 215/50 – 17 tyres was impressive, aiding driver confidence.
The steering wheel too has been given some play in the centre and hence is not as sharp as earlier. For a hardcore enthusiast, this might be a downer for most this won’t even be noticeable as feedback is still good. Overall, the new Ford EcoSport handles similar to the older model but offers more comfort now yet is the best handling compact SUV in the country right now and by a fair margin.
Ford Ecosport Safety
Ford EcoSport has excellent front and rear suspensions to ensure that its passengers enjoy a comfortable ride. The high Ford EcoSport ground clearance also plays a vital role in this aspect. The lower end models have tyre size of 195/65R15 whereas its top models come with 17-inch alloy wheels.
Ventilated disc brakes for the front wheel and drum brakes for the rear are good enough to bring the vehicle to an immediate halt. It comes with ABS and EBD so that the car does not skip or topple over when you apply sudden brakes in an emergency. All variants except for four Titanium models come with two airbags for driver and front seat passenger. The Titanium Plus models have six airbags to protect all passengers. Additional standard safety features include warnings for ‘door ajar,’ engine immobiliser, child safety locks, and a central locking system.
