Nissan Terrano Hatchback Overview

OVERVIEW ;

Nissan India has launched the new 2017 Nissan Terrano facelift priced at Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 14.2 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It’s been more than three years since the Terrano was launched in October 2013 and had received only one update, when the Terrano Groove Edition was launched. Nissan has introduced 22 new features with the 2017 Nissan Terrano facelift, and some much-needed features include – the new 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and voice recognition. Other features comprise of – electrically operable ORVMs, hill climb assist and cruise control. The interior too has been spruced up with a nice black and brown dual-tone colour scheme along with new fabrics or leather upholstery, depending on the variant. The steering wheel has been redesigned and now gets controls for telephony and audio. Thankfully, Nissan has also provided an armrest for the driver in the 2017 Nissan Terrano. The buttons for power windows are now illuminated and the wing mirrors now get integrated indicators.

DESIGN AND STYLE ;

At first glance a very untrained eye might not notice the Renault Duster that this Nissan is based on. And that’s fair given that almost every body panel on the Terrano is new except for the roof and rear quarter panel. The design seems more grown up and sophisticated when compared with the Duster. The front is what sees the most change with a completely new face that’s very in line with Nissan’s family look. The grille is all new and is a larger, more modern iteration of those three piece affairs we’re used to seeing on SUVs like the Patrol. The bonnet is also completely redesigned and features two lines that flow into the grille. Fresh bumpers make for a smarter housing for the fog lamps while the air dam ends in a bash guard in a similar fashion to the Duster. The exaggerated wheel arches from the Duster remain but the Terrano’s sharper visage reduces the overtly muscled impression you get from the Duster. New 16-inch wheels fill those arches quite well and the Terrano boasts high ground clearance that gives it an imposing look. The side profile is perhaps the most reminiscent of the Duster but even here both doors have been redesigned and they get a new line along the base that gives the side a little more definition. The B and C pillars have been blacked out. The rear also gets a thorough make over with more angular tail lamps that fill in those metal blanks much better than the Dusters lamp’s. It’s nice to see that the Nissan has made the rear lamps fully functional and they aren’t simply dummy plastic pieces added onto the sides. The sharp rear design complements the face well.

COMFORT AND CABIN ;

The cabin of the Terrano attempts a somewhat similar freshening up just like the redesigned exterior. But, the extent of change inside the Terrano is much lower than the outside. However, Nissan engineers have managed to still lift up the overall premiumness of the cabin, though this might be more evident in the top-trim variants. There is a slight variation in the interior colour theme, though the dashboard layout and major elements are mostly carry-forwards. There are a few changes such as the flip open storage box at the top of the centre stack. The combination of circular and rectangular aircon vents and the piano-black finish for the centre stack caught my attention in my test mule.

Faux wood door handles and the chrome bits all around the cabin are other elements that help boost the feeling of quality inside the Terrano. The rear aircon vents positioned between the two front seats (also found in the Duster) will be a blessing during the forthcoming summer. ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION ;

The Nissan Terrano comes with a 1.6 litre petrol engine and a 1.5 litre diesel engine. The diesel engine comes in two states of tune in which it generates 84 hp of power at 3,750 rpm and 200 Nm of torque at 1,900 rpm while in the other state of tune, it produces 109 hp of power at 3,900 rpm and 248 Nm of torque at 2,250 rpm. The petrol engine makes 103 hp of power at 5,350 rpm and 145 Nm of torque at 3,750 rpm

The Nissan Terrano comes with a six speed manual transmission for the diesel engine that has 109 hp of power while the petrol engine and the lower state of tune diesel engine is offered with a 5 speed gearbox. The Nissan Terrano diesel is also available in an AMT.In terms of safety, the Nissan Terrano is offered with Anti lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), dual front airbags, speed sensing automatic door locks and hazard warning switch.The Nissan Terrano has an ARAI claimed fuel efficiency of 13.2 kmpl for the petrol variants and 19 kmpl for diesel variant which is acceptable for its segment.

RIDE AND HANDLING ;

This is where the Terrano and Duster are identical. The overwhelming impression is that of a softly sprung front-drive car, with understeer when pushed beyond its limits. There is, at the same time, the impression that the suspension will cope with anything you throw at it, and this belief is justified when you put it through potholes, over speedbreakers and unpaved roads without slowing down, and there isn’t so much as loss of alignment. There is no wallowing at triple-digit speeds, either – something we otherwise take for granted with an SUV at this price point.

The brakes are solid discs in front and drums at the rear equipped with ABS and EBD for all but the base diesel variant. Thanks to the Terrano’s low kerb weight, they are enough to haul the vehicle to a halt from crazy speeds repeatedly without fade. Both bite and progression are good and inspire confidence. The Terrano has possibly the best ride and handling compromise for Indian conditions, with its predictable handling and 205mm ground clearance. It’s a pity that the four-wheel drive version isn’t on the cards for India, it would have made an interesting alternative to the established all-wheel drive SUVs around its price point. Tyres are a choice between Apollo Hawkz and MRF Wanderers, and these provide good grip both on and off-road, though they will not be able to do any serious work off the beaten path.

BRAKING AND SAFETY

Nissan Terrano boasts of a staunch and robust braking system. The front wheels of the compact SUV are incorporated with discs which make braking deft. While the front axle of the SUV has an independent McPherson strut type of mechanism with a coil spring and also a highly advanced anti-roll bar; the rear axle gets a torsion beam axle along with coil springs and a similar anti-roll bar for enhanced comfort for the rear passengers. Both these systems put together ensure that the passengers as well as the SUV are stable at all times. The top-end versions of the Terrano are equipped with the sophisticated Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) along with electronic brake force distribution technology, coupled with brake assist and a stability control module to further upgrade the braking mechanism of the SUV. Other safety features comprise of an engine immobilizer, central locking, driver seat belt reminder, doors-not-well-closed reminder, rear defogger, reverse parking sensor and a heated tailgate glass warning light.

Nissan has given considerable attention to the safety aspect of the Terrano. The steering wheel is tilt-adjustable and the power steering is highly responsive to aid manoeuvring of the SUV. The front fog lamps and a rear defogger along with a wash-&-wipe function incorporated in the rear wind screen, helps in giving better visibility in rainy and overcast conditions. The fog lamps also enhance the visibility of the vehicle.

BOTTOMLINE ;

The Nissan Terrano received its first major updates since its introduction back in 2013. Being the only SUV offering in the Indian market, the Terrano inevitably attracted lot of attention for those who does not prefer the Duster. Off course there is no questioning the fact that this SUV looks far better than Duster but that also does not hide away the fact that both the SUV’s are not so different than each other.
