Tata Hexa Exteriors

There’s the unmistakeable Aria silhouette hidden away in the overall shape of the Hexa. But that’s just about it and designers have used their current design philosophy to bring about a dramatic and butch style with good road presence. We liked the front fascia with the angled head lamps which complement the sweeping bonnet and sharply raked air dams on the bumper.

Nevertheless, the sharp A-pillar with the quarter glass along with the D-pillar downward slant of the body coloured sheet metal could have been better executed. Indeed, the 19-inch steel-finish alloys do a good job of filling up those flared and cladded wheel arches. In contrast, it was rear portion of the Hexa that didn’t appeal; especially the boxy looks and the slabs of chrome between the tail lamps. However, the Hexa looks well put together and exhibits the kind of quality that’s expected in the segment.

The front seats are supportive and offer good bolstering. They look quite good too thanks to the contrast coloured stitching and perforations on the leather like fabric. The driver’s seat gets eight-way adjustment but this is all completely manual. The second row is sufficient in terms of head room, leg room and under thigh support but with seats that we found a bit too stiff for our liking. Despite being billed as a seven-seater, the space in row three is quite less and is a bit woeful in terms of headroom making this sufficient for kids or short journeys. However, access to the third row is very easy in the seven-seat variant as both seat sections fold and tumble. The boot with both rows of seats up is sufficient for two to three pieces of airline size luggage but can be expanded by folding the seats.

Now here is where things get interesting as Tata has loaded up the Hexa with a quite a few features. The list includes climate control, touchscreen infotainment system with a dedicated mobile app, cooled glove box and six airbags. For the person behind the wheel Tata has fitted cruise control, 8-stage adjustable hill descent control and ABS as well ESP. There is also a digital trip computer with a colour TFT display but its controls are a bit odd to use. It is on par with the XUV500 in this regard but lacks keyless start, stowage spaces in front.

Tata Hexa Gearbox

The engine of Hexa has been derived from Aria and currently working in Safari Storme, the 2.2L Varicor 400 unit has been extensively tweaked. The company says the block, intake, head and turbo systems have been revised to return increased power and torque density and improved refinement levels. The 4-cylinder motor pumps out 156PS and 400Nm of torque which is transmitted either via 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox. There is also a diluted version of the engine with 150PS and 320Nm of torque, available for the base XE variant. But this engine is only available with the 5-speed manual transmission.

Start the engine and you will feel that it is fairly quiet, however it will take some to build smooth pace as the clutch shows a sudden bite. Moreover, it needs considerable amount of effort to change the gears with slotting into the 5th one needs a bit of speculation. The plus point of this engine is the convenient drivability it offers with the early and nice spooling of the turbo enabling you to stroll in single gear. While moving on, one can drag the rev needle to up to 4600 rpm. And you won’t experience any lack of performance in this rev range but it is not exciting either considering the kerb weight of over 2.2 ton. The engine is refined as mentioned earlier and remains silent till about 3200 rpm. The car uses ESP 9.0 from Bosch which packs features such as traction control, hill hold and hill descent control. In the comfort mode, there is sudden surge of torque which is tempered for a smoother driving experience and suit the sedate driving style. In the Dynamic mode, the engine performance remains unrestricted as the ESP intervention is delayed. In terms of comfort mode, the AWD system is engaged only when needed with about 45 percent of torque transmitted to the front wheels. Talking about the off-road mode, the AWD setup helps maintain consistency while the ESP which is recalibrated especially for this mode, helps the car to remain planted on loose surfaces.

The automatic gearbox is the one that would impress you the most. The 6-speed gearbox is a gem of transmission refining the character of the engine and making the experience of easy going much better. Though the shifts from the automatic gearbox aren’t lightning quick, but if you are driving in the normal conditions, the shifts are predictable, thus giving feeling of natural driving. If you are in the Sport mode, there is an aggressive downshift. This is to keep the engine in the 3400 rpm range to get maximum performance.The big dimensions would be a problem in pottering in the cities, especially in the congested areas. However, once you are on open stretches, you will feel that the car has come to life.

Though the car packs the same engine working in Safari Storme, the fuel efficiency has been improved by variety of means such as in the comfort mode when there is sudden increase in torque it is softened to get smoother drive experience and the gentle responses coming from helps in gaining more fuel economy. While the ARAI certified mileage stands at 17.6kmpl, still the real world mileage figures clearly shows that Hexa is a better highway buddy returning around 15kmpl. On the other hand, the car can easily deliver around 10kmpl in city driving conditions.

There isn’t any doubt that the earlier Aria was fully capable of handling bad roads. And the traits can be seen in the successor as well. The 19-inch wheels which are largest in its class are coupled with variable rate dampers offering excellent ride quality. Moreover, the way recalibrated suspension setup dismisses the potholes and other road imperfections is truly commendable. And more rigidity in chassis has helped in fine tuning of the suspension further. But at the rear, the suspension is much stiffer, this approach is to make the vehicle sportier. And this can be experienced at highways where the car feels totally composed as the suspension work as a cover up for the massive size of the vehicle. However, propelling it hard will increase the body roll.The hydraulic steering is light and vague at high speeds and this is a disadvantage. There is overmuch loose at the centre of steering and as you turn into the corners, it appears to be disconnected. But despite of all the odds, the Hexa is unquestionably the best in terms of ride quality in its class.

The Hexa equipment list consists of six airbags, ESP, traction control, ABS with EBD, climate control with vents on all three rows, auto headlamps, rain sensing wipers, and reverse parking sensors with a camera. There’s also power mirrors with demister, cruise control, rear sun blinds, an eight-way adjustable driver’s seat (non-electric), a multi-function steering wheel, and a 5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with JBL speakers, to name a few.

It does miss out on features like powered seats and keyless go, which is a norm in the segment. There’s no sunroof either, which the rivals offer. In short, manual gearbox variants include XM and XT in six and seven seater options along with the choice of automatic transmissions called XMA and XTA. Tata Hexa Summing Up

Has Tata done enough with the Hexa to let it succeed? We think so as this car has everything expected from a vehicle in the segment. It lacks things like keyless start, proper front storage spaces and is quite massive in terms of length- an issue that will pop up for parking space starved city dwellers. But on the positive side the feature list is comprehensive; it is quite spacious, has solid road presence and will let you go to most places without thinking twice. For the Hexa to now completely succeed Tata must price it in such a way that it undercuts its main rival- the Mahindra XUV500 variant-for-variant. Given the price range that we believe it will exist in, the Hexa is also a competitor for the range of D-segment sedans.

Tata Hexa currently is available in six different trims such as XE, XM, XT, XMA, XTA and XT 4X4. The pricing for the Hexa starts from Rs. 12.57 lakh and goes up to Rs. 17.97 lakh. Its base model XE is available at the price tag of Rs. 12.57 lakh. The mid-range trim XM and automatic variant XMA are offered at the price tag of Rs. 14.19 lakh and Rs. 15.43 lakh respectively.
